When we report questions a good deal later, we usually use the past tense.

Direct Speech – Present Simple – I like coffee.
Reported Speech – Past Simple – He said that he liked coffee.
Direct Speech – Present Progressive – Is it raining?
Reported Speech – Past Progressive – He asked if it was raining.
Direct Speech – Past Simple – I didn’kaki langit recognise you.
Reported Speech – Past Perfect – She explained that she hadn’t recognized me.
Direct Speech – Present Perfect – You have annoyed the dog.
Reported Speech – Past Perfect – I told her that she had annoyed the dog.
Direct Speech – Past Perfect – I hadn’n seen her before that day.
Reported Speech – Past Perfect – You said that you hadn’t seen her before that day.
Direct Speech – Shall / Will – We’ll be late.
